BONMA

This work represents two framed portraits of my grandmother, inspired by her migration to the UK from Antwerp and her Flemish heritage. I explore the ways in which this heritage influenced my own childhood, with floral appliqués and her embroidered signature, ‘Bonma’. Bonma is Flemish for ‘grandmother’ and through recreating her handwriting, taken from letters which I still keep, I hope to evoke and pay tribute to who she was.

This was created as part of ‘Traces: Stories of Migration’, a project by Making for Change at the London College of Fashion and visual artist Lucy Orta, exploring personal stories of migration across multiple generations through textile art.
